Jasper Johns was HUGE in the late 70s, Time covers, shows at the Museum of Modern Art. But for us starving art students, we were wondering what the hell all the fuss was about.

But looking back I have to admit, there are very few artists on the current scene now in 2005 that have much recognition outside the narrow circle of the art intelligentsia. Johns, with a few others, like Harring and Warhol was able to touch the general public with his work.
