Winter Solstice, 2013

This has been a crazy season, if less dramatic than the positively crazed 2012...

Some of you are already aware that we are in the process selling our home and looking to relocate away from the NYC tri-state region to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia or South Central PA in the Alleghenies. A week or so before the Thanksgiving weekend we had an offer and we’ve been over a month in the negotiating the contract details. Whuff! Still eyes to dot and tees to cross, and frazzled nerves. But if it all goes according to plan, next year’s note should be coming from a different address. We still have to get the rest of the dominoes lined up, but we’re working on it. The idea of another winter move (2001) is a little daunting, but we’ll deal.

One reason this card and note is so late is that we just went to contract. Kurt kind of wanted to not be in paperwork limbo before sending it out. He described it as being “in the box with Schödinger’s Cat.” So anyway, Blessed Solstice, everyone. Things are going to get kind of hectic around here in the coming weeks as we get organized for the move, go house hunting, pack, and Kurt still has to try to keep working pretty much straight through. We’re going to make some realtors crazy when they show houses and the first thing we ask is “broadband internet?” Hey, we have just a few professional requirements, a roof, ‘lectricity, and a high-speed net connection.

Nicholas is home from Buffalo State for the Winter Break. He seems to be doing better in his 2nd year and getting his head wrapped around the whole college experience. But we do recall how challenging Freshman Year at Pratt was for Kurt, he didn’t really his his stride till his Junior year and was in the Design department.

Alexander spent a good part of the year down at Four Quarters Interfaith Sanctuary as an intern. He did really well, better than he’s done in just about any other previous venue. They really like him at the farm and expect to have him back for the 2014 season. He does struggle with his AS, but it’s definitely better. He came home a little early this fall to decompress a bit over the winter break and help us out with the move.

Heather has been doing more amazing things with her looms, the big four harness, a couple of continuous strand frame looms, including projects with the intriguing Saori process. We’re looking at rehabbing (currently in storage) a smaller Structo Artcraft eight harness for more awesome. She also now has her eye on a really well-designed folding Saori loom to really get into the technique.

Kurt is of course working most of the time, um, duh. The Studio is holding together and his clients are for the most part pretty happy with him and his work. However a number them over the past few years have run aground in the current economy, but he’s managing to stay busy. It’s still mostly web design but with enough logo and print work to keep him from losing his mind. Moving the Studio to another region is going to be challenging, but it surely won’t be boring! He also sang at Sun Dance over the summer. Supported the visits of Wille Black Cat in the spring and fall and had the opportunity to record two more sessions of his Lakota songs. Fascinating!

We hope that all of you out there are hanging in there in these challenging times. Wishing you all a very healthy and happy holiday season and blessings for the coming year. Wi cho sa’ne.

Once we’re landed and have new coordinates, we’ll be passing that on, so stay tuned!
